Are you Prepared?

Hey just a little idea to get you a little more prepared. No panicking here but just making a few little changes to keep you and your family safe in an emergency. I posted about water before but took another class that was very informative. So here are a couple of tips. You don't have to rotate water that is stored properly the first time. WHAT! I did not know that but this is something I learned. Just do it and forget about it. This simple idea could save your life and make things easier in an emergency too. Start buying your soda in liter bottles and when its gone rinse really well. You can even use a little bleach to make sure it it is really clean. The idea is to store very clean water to start and then forget about it. The next idea is to simply put water in your empty laundry detergent and Clorox bottles. Don't even worry about rinsing out the soap. Just label them for cleaning only. Just fill them up with water and store them everywhere under beds, in the garage, deep cupboards etc. Every time I empty a bottle I immediately fill it with water and every time a little voice in my head says "Way to go" you are on a roll. It feels so good to do the right thing and be prepared. Now I know none of us have enough room in our houses to store a whole year supply of water but store as much as you possibly can. Find a way to make extra room and then start thinking about getting some kind of water filtration system. So that you can clean any water you find in an emergency, but I'll go more into that another time. Its also a good idea for every household to do this. Don't expect that your mom's house will have everything you need. What if you can't get to mom's? Just a thought. This is counsel from our prophet not just a good idea. So get busy and do this one. It really is a no brainer.

Oh and just think of all the plastic we will be keeping out of the landfills. We are going green too.

i guess it's ok to store in plastic, you won't be concerned about it in an emergency. only say this because it's best to store water in glass. but i never do.
great advice. we should do a weekly or monthly challenge. make it a game. i think that would totally motivate me.

Yeah, but how do I get past the "I'm always moving and not going to live on one place for another 18 months" mentality. I keep saying that it has to wait, because honestly, if I stored water now - I would just have to chuck it in 3 months to move to NY. And then we're only there 10 months. . .and then. . .I'm my own worse enemy. ;)

These are GREAT tips, though.

Hey guys no excuses to it anyway, even if you have to dump it out Hanna, or give it to a friend when you leave if they are in to this stuff they'll love you for it. The idea is to start a good habit and make the change. And Shanda I do remember hearing something about storing in glass too but that was a long time ago not sure on that one but this teacher seemed to think that we should just store it anyway and that the the kind of plastic in soda bottles are totally safe. They are food grade and that is what matters. Milk jugs won't work for sure on the other hand. I love the challenge idea and suggested that before but not a big response. Maybe we could just all regularly post what we are working on and give tips more often. I'm fired up and this is my goal this year. To finally be prepared. I talk on this subject for hours. So much to share and so many ideas so I will keep posting if you all like it.

Yay! You so totally rock. Doesn't it feel good. Now you have 5 gallons you didn't have before. I just use the bleach to rinse out soda or something if it is dirty. There really isn't a need to add bleach to water if it is coming from a clean source to begin with. YAY YOU!
